Kiln & CoBristol

Studio notes — written between firings, Bristol

And when the kiln finally cools — three days, door shut, no peeking — the shelf at Kiln & Co fills again.

We are a small ceramics studio and shop in Bristol. Everything begins as a lump of grey clay on a wheel that faces the window; we throw it, trim it, glaze it in the colours the harbour does in the morning, and fire it twice. What survives goes on the shelf below. Very little is perfect. Everything is considered.

We make tableware for everyday tables, one-off pieces for when the clay insists on being something else, and we teach — small, quiet workshops at the wheel.

An experiment

Clay remembers every hand.

Move your cursor across the vessel — press gently, then let go. This is roughly how a pot is persuaded into being, minus the mess and the years.

The real thing happens at our workshops: an evening at the wheel, small groups, aprons provided.

Ask about a workshop

A vessel on the wheel, drawn in sand tones.

Sea-white

Our everyday glaze — the colour of foam a second after the wave breaks. Nearly all the tableware wears it. It forgives nothing, which is why we love it.

Harbour blue

Mixed after a winter walk along the Avon, where the water goes the colour of old bottles. It goes on thick and breaks over edges like weather.

Sand

A warm, quiet glaze for pieces that want to disappear into the table.

We fire once a month. The shelf is restocked a few days after every firing.

The way to buy

Buy a piece, book a wheel.

Everything on the shelf can be reserved with a message. Commissions, tableware sets and workshop places begin the same way — write to the studio and we reply between firings, usually within two days.

  • Post—wrapped in paper and wood wool, insured, sent UK-wide.
  • Collection—from the Bristol studio, arranged by message.
  • Workshops—evenings at the wheel; leave a message and we'll hold a place.

Each piece is one of a kiln-load — if two people ask for the same bowl, the first message wins it.
